Evening Shema

Evening · 1 min

  • ●An evening card that appears as the day winds down.
  • ●The one-minute mitzvah that saves a streak when the day got away from you.
  • ●Full text with transliteration and English.

What is the bedtime Shema?

The Shema is said twice daily, "when you lie down and when you rise". The bedtime Shema is the evening half: the first paragraph, often with a short blessing, said before sleep. It is one of the last things a Jew says each day.

Why it matters

The day opens with Modeh Ani and closes with the Shema. That symmetry is deliberate: the same declaration frames waking and sleeping. Saying it at night is a way of handing back the day, worries included, and going to sleep in trust rather than in a scroll.
